What polycarbonate does that other shells do not

Hard shell luggage is judged on one thing: what happens on impact. Polycarbonate absorbs a hit and returns to shape, where ABS tends to crack and aluminium dents permanently. It is also among the lightest shell materials available, which is why nearly every tested-and-rated hardside spinner suitcase on the market uses it.

Hard shell or soft shell

Hard shell suitcases protect what is inside and clean up easily, which makes them the default for laptops, cameras and anything breakable. Soft shell bags flex into a full overhead bin and add exterior pockets for a passport or a laptop you need in the security line.

If you mostly fly and pack clothing plus electronics, hard shell is the better buy. If you drive, overpack by habit, or want to reach things without opening the case, add a soft shell weekender alongside it rather than replacing the hard shell.
